On March 13, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez responded to statements made by his U.S. counterpart, Marco Rubio, who had labeled the governments of Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua as “a threat” to the region.
Rodríguez criticized Rubio’s stance, accusing him of treating Latin American and Caribbean countries as “banana republics” and attempting to impose U.S. interests through “false promises and threats.”
Tensions are escalating in a context where illegal migration, transnational crime, and authoritarian regimes are focal points on the U.S. political agenda.
In his message to the Organization of American States (OAS), Rubio reaffirmed his country’s commitment to strengthening alliances with “democratic partners” in the region, a strategy that many in Havana view as interventionist.
Carlos Fernández de Cossío, Cuba’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, also addressed the issue on the television program “Mesa Redonda”, arguing that Washington “encourages” Cuban emigration through economic aggression that has worsened living standards on the island. Fernández emphasized that many Cubans emigrate due to economic reasons, exacerbated by the U.S. embargo.
The Cuban official noted that a migration framework exists between the two countries and that, despite tensions, deportation flights have been conducted in accordance with previous agreements. However, he also warned of growing tensions among Cubans in the U.S. amid rumors of potential restrictions on travel to Cuba.
